The wired Nacon Pro Compact Controller is a more petite gamepad that might better. And Elden Rings half-assed mouse and keyboard controls could certainly tempt you toward a controller. I have been following the idea "if it's documented, then I can use" but after this incident, it seems to not be the case. There are other options out there as well, in both wired and wireless forms.
